Read the abacus
Look at the beads and say the number. Eight frames a run, one skill at a time, on the same bead engine our students use — no signup, nothing to install.
Three steps, eight frames

Why reading beads comes before adding on them
Most abacus courses start with addition, and most stuck learners are stuck one step earlier: they cannot look at a frame and say what it holds without counting every bead. The arithmetic of a single rod is tiny — the one bead above the bar is worth five, each of the four below it is worth one, and a bead counts only while it is pushed against the bar — so the whole of reading is turning those facts into one glance per rod instead of a count. Every rule taught later assumes that glance is already there. Small friends, big friends, carrying across rods: each is a substitution performed on a rod you are holding in mind, and a learner who is still counting has no attention left for the substitution itself. The rule then looks hard when the reading is what failed.
Reading is also the half that is almost never practised on its own. Worksheets ask for answers, not for readings, so a mistake surfaces as a wrong total with no way to tell whether the arithmetic or the frame was misread. This tool separates them. Nothing is added here and nothing is timed: the frame holds a number, you say the number, and a wrong answer is named as one of the four things beginners actually do rather than being marked and moved past. One habit is worth building alongside it — take the rods left to right, in the order the number is written, so the answer comes out in place order and never has to be reassembled at the end. Eight frames take about two minutes, which is worth doing before every practice session for a week rather than once for an hour.
The four rungs, and what each one breaks
The obvious ladder is by width: one rod, then two, then three. That ladder is wrong, because width is not what a beginner is failing at. Each rung below is a moment where you have to believe something new about what you are looking at, and the rod count is a side effect of the moment rather than the moment itself. The three misreadings they are built around are worth naming, because a learner rarely knows which one they have just made: the bead above the bar is ignored, so seven comes back as two; an interior zero is dropped, so 407 comes back as 47; and the rods are read from the biggest pile instead of from the left, so 27 comes back as 72. Work down the list in order, and treat a rung as finished when the answers arrive with no pause to count — about a second a frame on the two one-rod rungs, two seconds on place value, and three on the empty-rod rung, where the extra time goes on checking a rod that has nothing on it rather than counting one that has.
- Earth beads
- One rod, one to four beads below the bar. Count them with a finger — nothing is abstract yet.
- The five bead
- One rod, and the bead above the bar joins in. One bead now means five, which is the biggest jump on the whole frame.
- Place value
- Two or three rods, none of them empty. The same beads mean different numbers depending on which rod they sit on.
- Empty rods
- Three rods, one of them empty. An empty rod is a zero, not a rod to skip — this is how 407 gets read as 47.
The same frame the students use
The beads on this page are not a picture of an abacus. They are the exact component that runs inside the Kani Math app, loaded straight from it: the same rod geometry, the same bead spacing, the same place labels above the rods, and the same behaviour on a phone as on a laptop. What you practise reading here is what you will be looking at everywhere else, which matters more than it sounds. A learner who trains on a stylised diagram has to re-learn the real frame later, usually at the exact point where the arithmetic has become hard enough to need the fluency.
It works with a screen reader
Each rod is a labelled control, so the frame can be explored with the keyboard as well as with a finger. While a question is live, the rods describe their bead positions and not their value: you hear something like “100 column, heaven beads down: 1, earth beads up: 2”, and you work out seven yourself, exactly as a sighted visitor does. Once you have answered, the frame is allowed to state its value and the digits appear under the rods. The exercise is the same either way, which is the whole point — an accessible version that reads the answer out is not an accessible version of this exercise.
