THE PROGRAM

What is Kani Math?

Kani Math is a complete mental-arithmetic curriculum built on the soroban (the Japanese abacus). Children first master the physical abacus, then learn to picture it in their mind — a decades-old training path that produces rapid, accurate mental calculation. Kani Math reimagines that curriculum as a cosmic journey. Every exercise, every milestone, every leaderboard exists to make the practice feel like play — without compromising the rigor of the method.

🧠

Mental math, built to last

Visualizing the abacus rewires how children process numbers — improving focus, memory, and calculation speed long after the program ends.

Abacus-first foundation

Every concept starts on a real abacus widget — counting, small friends, big friends, multi-row, multiplication, division — before moving to mental form.

🎮

Playful, not childish

Boss battles, versus mode, coins, streaks, daily missions. Game mechanics that reward consistency, not just correctness.

📊

Measurable progress

Parents and teachers see streaks, accuracy, and level progression on pages built for adults — not just emoji and fireworks.

🌐

45 languages, one app

The app runs in 45 languages — with proper right-to-left typography in Arabic, Urdu, Persian and Central Kurdish. Switch language any time — progress and settings stay intact.

👨‍👩‍👧

Built for families

Parent dashboards with Premium, daily quotas, and a separate teacher face for classroom use. Premium also lets one device hold up to eight children’s profiles.

THE LADDER

INSIDE THE APP

Everything an abacus student needs.

Kani Math bundles a full learning suite — not a flashcard deck. Each module is tuned to the level the child is on.

🎤
Voice Answers
Hands-free Shout mode lets kids speak their answer instead of typing. The answer is recognised by the speech service built into the browser or the phone.
🪜
Levels
Nine levels of practice cards, one skill at a time. A card opens when the one before it is mastered, and every level ends with its own test.
⏱️
Sprints
Four timed modes — Math, Flash, Abacus and Column Sprint. Type the answer against the clock, climb the levels, and see where you rank.
Virtual Abacus
Free-play abacus with column, digit, and bead-count options. Sandbox before you drill.
⚡
Flash Drill
Numbers flash on screen — add them in your head. The classic mental-arithmetic speed builder, tunable from beginner to competition pace, with optional voice answers (Shout mode) and audio-only Listening mode.
✖️
Times tables
Flip cards, typed quizzes and a timed challenge for tables up to 12 — with the facts your child keeps missing coming round more often.
🎯
Abacus Lab
A number appears, you form it on the beads before the clock runs out. The reverse of a drill, and the fastest way to make bead positions automatic.
⚔️
Versus
Head-to-head mental math — play a friend, a classmate, or a CPU tuned to your level.
👾
Boss Battle
Nine themed bosses, each with their own number range and damage profile. Beat one to unlock the next, or retreat and try again — your best HP and attempt count are saved.
🏁
Competition
Train in the real contest format — 200 questions in 8 minutes, across categories A to I. A physical abacus is allowed up to category C and mental only above it, and every paper can be printed for offline practice.
📝
Practice exams
The Anzan Exam (10 kyu to 10th dan) and the Flash Exam (20 kyu to 20th dan), modelled on Japan’s kentei; each level opens after a pass of the one before. Practice, not an official exam.
🏆
Leaderboards
Global rankings, plus a class leaderboard with a Hero of the week.
👨‍👩‍👧
Parent Dashboard
Streaks, time-on-task, accuracy trends and a daily screen-time card — everything a parent needs to see without nagging.

Common questions

At what age can a child start abacus math?
Most children start between five and seven, once they can recognise written digits 1 to 9 and sit still for about ten minutes. Younger is possible with an adult alongside. There is no benefit in starting earlier than the attention span allows.
Is the soroban better than a traditional abacus?
For mental-arithmetic training, yes — and that is a narrow claim. The Japanese soroban uses one heaven bead and four earth beads per rod, so every digit has exactly one representation. Older designs with more beads allow several, which makes the bead picture ambiguous and much harder to hold as a mental image.
How long before we see results?
Bead fluency at single digits usually takes a few weeks of short daily sessions. Mental calculation starts around the fourth or fifth level, typically a year to eighteen months in. Anyone promising mental arithmetic in weeks is describing a different thing.
Does my child need a physical abacus?
Not to start. Kani Math runs a full virtual soroban in the browser and the finger technique transfers either way. Many families add a wooden abacus later because it is pleasant to use, not because the method requires it.
Is abacus training just memorisation?
The opposite. Only the complement pairs are memorised at the start, the two that make 5 and the five that make 10, and nothing else is. Everything after that is a procedure carried out on a bead image — which is why the training transfers to working memory and visualization rather than to recall.
