Each level decides which of the four operations appear and how big the numbers get. Addition draws two numbers from the range that level sets; subtraction shows the same problems in reverse — the sum minus one of its addends — so an answer is never negative. Multiplication takes one factor from a small range and one from a large range, and division is those products in reverse, so every division answer comes out a whole number. The left and right sides of addition and multiplication problems are shuffled, so you cannot settle into reading only one side. The ladder runs to a hundred levels: addition alone at the start, subtraction from level 6, multiplication from level 21 and division from level 46.
Then the clock starts and a problem appears in large type. You type the answer. The instant the digits you have typed match the answer, the problem counts as solved and the next one replaces it — there is no button to press, no pause, and no animation to wait through. A wrong keystroke does not end the problem: correct it and carry on, though the problem is marked as corrected rather than clean. A small skip control shows you the answer for a moment and moves on, counting the problem as attempted but not solved.
When the clock runs out, your score is simply the number of problems you solved. The results screen puts beside it how many you attempted, what share you solved without a wrong keystroke, and your pace in problems per minute — and it remembers your best score separately for every combination of settings, so improving at two-minute addition never hides behind a long all-operations run.
Why a timed sprint builds number sense
Arithmetic has two layers: knowing how to work an answer out, and having the common facts arrive without being worked out at all. Schoolwork mostly exercises the first. A sprint isolates the second — with a clock running and nowhere to write, any fact that is not yet automatic shows up immediately as a hesitation, and the facts you do own get faster with every run. Because the sprint reports pace and clean-solve rate rather than a bare mark, you can watch recall becoming automatic from one week to the next.
This is the same idea behind anzan, the mental side of abacus training that the Kani Math program builds toward: the abacus gives a child a method for holding numbers, and speed work makes using it effortless. The nine levels of the program climb from bead basics to multi-digit mental calculation, and at every rung the difference between knowing a move and owning it is exactly what a timed run measures. A score that keeps climbing on the same settings is one of the clearest signs that mental arithmetic has stopped being effortful.
What this drill is called
A timed run of arithmetic goes by several names, and they all describe this. Teachers and parents most often call it a mental math drill or a mental arithmetic drill, which is simply practice at recalling facts without writing anything down. In a classroom the same exercise is a timed arithmetic drill or a speed drill, and the one-minute paper version has been called a mad minute for decades.
Online the format settled on arithmetic sprint, which is where the name of this page comes from. In soroban and abacus schools the skill itself is called anzan: calculating on a mental image of the beads rather than on paper or a frame. This drill is the recall half of that discipline, which is why it sits alongside the abacus work in the Kani Math program rather than apart from it.

Everyone starts at level 1 — addition with small numbers — and climbs from there. The rows below are starting points by stage, not placements; move up whenever a run feels smooth, and drop a level rather than shortening the clock when accuracy slips.

Two settings deserve a word. Division looks hardest but is often the best times-table drill there is, because every problem is a multiplication fact read backwards. And a shorter clock is not an easier run — 30 seconds rewards a fast start, while 10 minutes is a genuine test of staying accurate when the novelty has worn off.
What a good score looks like
It depends entirely on the settings, which is why the sprint keeps a separate personal best for each combination. On the default two-minute addition and subtraction run, a child still building fluency might solve a handful of problems, a practised one somewhere in the twenties, and a quick adult noticeably more — none of those numbers means much against a different range or a different clock, so compare like with like.
The two numbers worth watching are your own best on fixed settings, and the clean-solve percentage next to it. A rising score with falling accuracy usually means guessing at digits rather than calculating; a rising score with a high clean rate is real speed. A week of short daily runs moves both further than one long session.
