For parents

Is my child ready for abacus?

Answer nine quick questions about what your child can already do — counting, focus, fine-motor control — and get an honest verdict: ready now, ready with a few weeks of prep, or better to wait. No math knowledge required, nothing to prepare.

The nine signals

Think of your child on an ordinary day, not their best day. “Sometimes” is a perfectly good answer — it usually means the signal is emerging.

  1. 1Recognizes the written digits 1–9, even out of order.
  2. 2Counts ten objects, touching them one at a time without skipping.
  3. 3Stays with one activity for about ten minutes.
  4. 4Follows a two-step spoken instruction, like “pick it up, then put it in the box”.
  5. 5Picks up small things — beads, buttons — precisely with two fingers.
  6. 6Understands “more” and “less” when comparing two small groups.
  7. 7Shows interest in numbers — counts stairs, asks “how many?”.
  8. 8Can be wrong in a game without giving up on it.
  9. 9Says which of two numbers up to ten is bigger.
