Flash anzan is the classic mental-abacus exercise: numbers appear briefly one after another, and you add or subtract each one on the abacus you picture in your head. It trains the jump from moving real beads to pure visualization — the skill behind the famous calculation speed of abacus students.

Common questions

What is flash anzan?
Numbers appear one at a time, each for a fraction of a second, and you hold the running total in your head — there is nothing to write on and nothing left on screen to look back at. It is the competition form of mental abacus: the child pictures the beads moving and reads the answer off the imagined frame at the end.
How is this different from the flash anzan drill in the app?
This one is rule-targeted. You pick a bead rule and every card is built so that rule actually fires; the app’s drill gives you speed and digit-width controls instead. Use this page when a check has told you which rule is weak, and the app when you want to push pace or size.
Does the rule I pick really appear in the numbers?
Yes. Sequences come from the same trace-checked generator the Bead Checkup uses, which replays each addition bead by bead and rejects any card where the chosen rule does not fire on at least four of the ten moves. A sequence that merely permits the rule is not good enough.
My child can do the arithmetic but not at this speed. Is that normal?
Yes, and it is the wrong thing to fix first. Flash anzan is a speed test laid on top of a skill; if the skill is shaky the speed only hides which part broke. Work the rule on paper or on a frame until it is automatic, then come back — the pace stops mattering surprisingly quickly.
Can I change the speed or the number of digits?
Not here. This page runs a fixed five cards of ten single-digit numbers so the rule stays the only variable. Speed, digit width, row count and multi-digit flash live in the Kani Math app, which also remembers scores between sessions.
