How to use them

  1. 1Print the deck and cut along the dashed lines.
  2. 2Hold a card up and ask for the number the beads show.
  3. 3Start with one rod. Move to two only when the answer comes without counting.
  4. 4Turn the number off to quiz, on to study — the answer list prints either way.

Reading a bead position as a number instantly, without counting the beads one by one, is the skill every later technique is built on. Cards drill it faster than a screen does because there is no interface between the child and the number. Nothing here is uploaded and no account is involved.

Common questions

What do soroban flash cards train?
Instant bead reading. A card shows one bead picture and the child says the number without counting beads — heaven bead down is 5, each earth bead up against the bar is 1. Every later technique assumes that step is free; a child still counting beads one by one cannot run a complement, because the reading eats the time the move needs.
Which numbers can the cards show?
One, two or three rods — 1 to 9, 10 to 99, or 100 to 999 — and six to thirty-six cards per deck in steps of six. Values are drawn without repeats until the range runs out, so a twelve-card single-rod deck necessarily repeats: there are only nine single-digit numbers to draw from.
Where are the answers?
Under the deck, as a numbered list that matches the card order and prints with the sheet. That list appears while the number is hidden on the card faces, which is the default: a card with its value printed underneath is a reference card, not a quiz. Turn the number on for a child who is still learning to read positions.
How many rods should we start with?
One. One-rod cards suit Foundation and Basic, where the job is recognising positions for 1 to 9. Move to two rods when single-rod answers come back with no pause, which lines up with Elementary A and B and their two-digit work. Three-rod cards are for Intermediate B, where three-digit operations start. Adding rods before the reading is automatic slows both.
Can I print the same deck twice?
Yes. Each deck carries a number, and the same rod count, card count and deck number always regenerate the identical cards — so a teacher can hand every table the same set, or reprint a lost card. New deck steps the number for different values at the same difficulty. The cards are drawn as vectors, so they stay sharp at any print size.
