Abacus training vs maths apps: why gamified practice plateaus
Most maths apps are quiz engines with rewards attached. That works until the child can already answer the quiz — and then it stops working.
A maths app that a child opens voluntarily is already doing something most worksheets cannot. The question is what happens after the first few months, and the answer is usually a plateau nobody warns you about.
Why the plateau happens
Most apps ask questions and reward correct answers. The difficulty rises, but the underlying activity never changes: recognise the problem, retrieve or compute the answer, collect the reward. Once retrieval is fast, the app has nothing left to teach — it can only ask harder questions of the same kind, and the reward loop starts carrying the motivation on its own.
Abacus training has a different shape because the method itself changes underneath the child. First the beads do the remembering. Then the beads are withdrawn and the image does. Then the image gets faster and wider. Each stage is a genuinely new skill, not the same skill at a higher number.
What to look for in either
- Does the activity change over time, or only the difficulty?
- Can the child do something after six months that they could not do at all before — not just faster?
- Is the reward loop carrying the practice? Take the rewards away for a week and see what survives.
- Does it produce anything measurable you can check yourself, on paper, away from the app?
