Indonesian sempoa class fees vs a self-serve app: the real total

The first question parents ask is not about method, it is about a number: what does a sempoa class cost per month, and is the figure the local centre just quoted normal? Indonesia is one of the few markets where those numbers are actually published, so the list below can be used as-is — provided you hold on to two things: every figure carries a date, and a monthly figure is not a total.

What sempoa classes cost in Indonesia: the published figures, dated

The most usable open source for the Indonesian market is a roundup by the independent education site KalderaNews, published in November 2023, listing seven sempoa tutoring options with indicative monthly fees. Two caveats are compulsory: these are 2023 estimates, and the article does not specify what each figure includes. It is also worth saying once, plainly, that no operator in this category — Kani included — publishes audited figures; every provider number here is self-reported. And in franchise networks, fees are set centre by centre, so a single national price does not exist.

• Sempoa SIP: Rp350,000–500,000 per child per month for three meetings a week.
• Sempoa Kreatif: Rp120,000–350,000 per month.
• Sempoa Sugaku: around Rp560,000 per month.
• Sempoa Ceria: around Rp500,000 per month.
• CMA Mental Arithmetic: starting from Rp1,425,000 — note the “starting from”, which is a floor rather than a price.

What the monthly figure leaves out

• One-off registration. A US provider previously published a USD 45 registration fee alongside its tuition; that fee page no longer opens, so treat the figure as previously published and unconfirmed.
• Books, per level. An Egyptian listing published on 3 May 2015 reported EGP 220 a month plus EGP 100 for a full level’s books. The figures themselves are eleven years stale, but the structure — monthly tuition plus a book purchase at every level — is still the pattern.
• Tools and materials. Indian Abacus publishes a one-time material cost of INR 1,100 alongside coaching from INR 1,800 per level for three months, with rates varying by location tier (undated page, retrieved July 2026).
• Exams and certificates. In Japan the soroban proficiency exams are charged separately from lessons: fees effective April 2024 run from JPY 1,000 for grades 7–10 to JPY 2,800 for grade 1.
• Payment terms. ALOHA Ireland, one of the few providers publishing a headline price on its own site, lists 420€ per term per level — two hours of class a week, groups of a maximum of 10 students, 17-week terms — with four instalments of 105€, a 50€ late registration fee and a stated no-refunds policy (undated page, retrieved July 2026). That price buys live in-person teaching, so it is not a like-for-like comparison against software.
• Travel and a parent’s hours. On nobody’s price list, but two round trips a week is a real cost.

Three models: a centre, a live online class, a self-serve app

• The centre. One long weekly session in a class of many children. A SIP Abacus franchisee’s course page sets out a weekly session of 2 hours 15 minutes with a maximum of 15 students, across eleven levels of 13–16 weeks. SIP Abacus itself does not publish fees and directs parents to their local centre, because franchise pricing is set locally.
• The live online class. A real teacher, a small group, a fixed slot. Mastermind Abacus publishes eight levels of three months each, taught twice a week for one hour, at a 1:5 teacher-to-student ratio; that page publishes no fees.
• The self-serve app. No schedule, short practice every day. The published range here is wide: Vedaavi Abacus lists USD 2.49/month or USD 13.99/year (accessed July 2026), Abacus4Everyone lists INR 399/month for students (July 2026), and Kani publishes about USD 7/month with a free tier.

An honest price comparison has to name what it is comparing against, in the same sentence. Against Indonesian centre tuition at the 2023 figures above, a self-serve subscription is clearly lighter. Against other apps, Kani is the more expensive option: USD 7 a month sits above Vedaavi’s USD 2.49 and above Abacus4Everyone’s INR 399. So the decision is not “which is cheapest” but which model fits your household. If your child thrives in a scheduled class — with an adult who notices a wrong finger technique in week two — centre fees buy something software cannot. If your child needs ten minutes a day and you cannot make two round trips a week, the schedule is the part that fails first.

Cost the whole ladder, not the first month

The monthly number misleads because the programme is long. A level typically runs three months, and the ladders whose figures are published above run from eight levels to eleven — two to three years if the child stays. Do the multiplication yourself: Rp350,000 a month across 24 months is Rp8.4 million before registration, books, the tool, exams and travel. What makes that sum fragile is dropping out. One abacus teacher, writing on a teaching blog in July 2024, observes that abacus classes usually run about 75 minutes, which is a stretch for young children whose focus lasts 10–15 minutes, and that among her own young students “a few left after just one day, while others dropped out after a couple of months”. That is one teacher’s experience, not retention data, but it is enough to remember that the money usually burns around level two. Kani’s ladder has nine levels, Foundation through Grand, and bills monthly with no per-level fee.

Sempoa bayangan: what is actually being taught

What is being sold is not the frame, it is the picture of the frame: calculating in your head on an imagined abacus. Sempoa Kreatif uses the term sempoa bayangan for its method and states it was founded on 1 January 2006 with more than 100 branches and more than 16,000 students and alumni — the company’s own undated account, with page evidence suggesting the copy dates from around 2021. The concept is the same one Japan calls anzan. On how far the benefit goes, the best available evidence is real but narrow. Barner and colleagues’ randomised controlled trial in Vadodara, India (Child Development, 2016; 204 children enrolled, 183 completing, three hours a week) found an arithmetic advantage of d = .60 on the study’s own measure, but reported that the training did not alter basic cognitive abilities. The same authors’ one-year classroom-randomised trial of 180 first and second graders (Journal of Numerical Cognition, 2017) saw no evidence of differential change, and closed by urging caution about mental abacus as a short-term educational intervention. Chunjie Wang’s 2020 review in Frontiers in Neuroscience finds the training has the potential to enhance mathematics, working memory and numerical magnitude processing, while writing that its effect on fluid intelligence “appears to not go beyond a placebo effect”, and noting that most studies detecting benefit did so after around three years. The practical reading: pay for arithmetic fluency, not for an intelligence jump.

If your child already attended a centre and stopped partway, do not restart from zero. In Kani a level is an explicit placement rather than something derived from age: there are nine levels from Foundation to Grand, and a short placement check decides which rung a child enters at. A child who finished two levels at a centre is usually past bead recognition but not necessarily done with the complement rules — which is exactly what placement is for.
