Mental math competitions in the Arab world: who runs them, how to train
Who actually organises mental math competitions in the Arab world, what is documented with a date in Qatar, Iraq and Jordan, and how to train at home with a full paper and an answer key — keeping speed a measuring instrument, not a finish line.
A clip lands on your phone: a big hall, rows of children, a screen flashing digits, a few seconds of silence, then applause. A mental math competition. And the first thing parents ask is not who won — it is three practical questions. Who actually organises this? Can my child enter? And how do we train at home without turning arithmetic into pressure?
Who actually organises mental math competitions?
- Ministries and schools — run by a ministry of education or by the school itself, scoped by school grade, and open without a subscription to any commercial programme.
- Programme championships — run by the company that teaches the curriculum: local heats, then a Gulf or Arab championship, then an international final. Entry is normally tied to enrolment at the programme’s own centres.
- Independent associations with graded exams — not one championship but a ladder of ranks. The League for Soroban Education of Japan, for instance, runs a formal flash-anzan certification with 20 kyu grades and 10 dan ranks, using 15-problem sittings at member centres and 30-problem unified sittings.
The official tier: what is documented, with a date
- Qatar — the Ministry of Education and Higher Education organised the first edition of a national mental-arithmetic competition for Grade 1 and Grade 2 students across government schools, reported by the ministry and by two Qatari dailies in early May 2024. What is documented is a first edition, not a fixed annual fixture.
- Iraq — on 23 February 2025 the Ministry of Education announced that Iraq had taken first place, for the second consecutive year, in the Arab Memory and Mental Arithmetic Championship, which it said drew 500 Arab participants from 12 Arab countries, with Sudan second and Libya third. The figures are as the ministry gave them.
- Jordan — the GCJO championship is organised by Habibullah International Foundation in cooperation with the Ministry of Education; reported editions include an international championship at the Royal Cultural Palace in Amman in January 2026 and a GCJO 2026 event at Applied Science University in June 2026 with competitors from 15 countries. Worth knowing: gcjo.net currently serves a notice that the domain has expired rather than site content, so dates are best confirmed with the organiser or the ministry directly.
Reading the words “world champion” critically
Take a documented example. The UAE daily Al-Ittihad reported on 18 July 2023 that the fifth Smart Brain Gulf mental-arithmetic championship drew 250 students competing in person and 270 remotely, across 14 levels covering ages 4 to 15, and that the winners qualified for the programme’s international final in Thailand that August, reported as involving 22 nations; Smart Brain’s UAE site says students receive certificates from the programme’s main centre in Thailand. Those are the organiser’s numbers as carried by the newspaper, which is the norm here: no operator in this category publishes audited participation figures — Kani included. So, for any title from any organiser, ask three things before it means anything: which body awarded it, at which level and age category, and how many children were in that category.
The three question formats: written, dictated, flashed
- Written (the paper) — columns of printed problems: multi-row addition, multiplication, division. Usually scored on how many are right inside a fixed time. It is the broadest format, the least dramatic to watch, and the one the published sample papers are made of.
- Dictated (listening) — the numbers are read aloud once, with nothing written in front of the child. It tests working memory and how fast a running total can be updated more than it tests arithmetic, and it is the format that ambushes even well-prepared children.
- Flashed — digits appear on a screen and vanish faster than they can be said aloud. At the athletic far end, Guinness World Records lists the fastest mental arithmetic (15 sets of three-digit numbers) – Flash Anzan™ at 1.61 seconds, by Rikako Miyamoto of Japan, in Nakano, Tokyo, on 18 February 2024, as listed when checked on 30 July 2026.
How to actually train: a full paper and an answer key
- One full paper a week, on the clock — not ten problems, but a whole category paper from first question to last. A competition tests stamina and pacing, not a single sum.
- Mark it against the answer key immediately — late marking teaches the mistake. A key that matches the paper turns marking into one minute instead of an evening.
- Re-drill only the category that lost the points — if the points went in multiplication, multiplication is the week’s practice, not everything again.
- One dictated set every day — five minutes is enough; this is the format that gets skipped first and lost later.
- Work through published sample papers — PAMA Global, an abacus and mental arithmetic association based in Taiwan, publishes downloadable sample exam papers for levels 1 to 12 plus Advanced, and runs an annual competition.
Ages and categories: level before age
Categories in this field are built on level far more than on age. The Gulf championship reported by Al-Ittihad was spread across 14 levels covering ages 4 to 15, while Qatar’s national competition was scoped to Grade 1 and Grade 2 only. So the useful question is not how old your child is, but where they sit on the ladder. In Kani the ladder is nine levels from Foundation to Grand, and the level is an explicit placement the family chooses and the child’s work confirms — nothing is inferred from a birth date. An eight-year-old sitting at Basic trains on the Basic paper, not on the paper for their age.
What competitions do not tell you: speed is not the finish line
The evidence on abacus-based mental calculation training is much quieter than the tone of a championship. Chunjie Wang’s 2020 review in Frontiers in Neuroscience finds that the training “has the potential to enhance various cognitive skills including mathematics, working memory and numerical magnitude processing”, but it also states that the effect on fluid intelligence “appears to not go beyond a placebo effect”, that this may be another case of training whose benefits show up only in tasks tightly related to the trained ones, and that most studies detecting a benefit did so after around three years. A classroom-randomized trial published by Barner and colleagues in 2017, covering 180 first- and second-grade children, “did not see evidence of differential change in performance”, and its authors conclude by urging “caution in the adoption of MA as a short-term educational intervention”. That constrains what Kani may claim about itself exactly as much as it constrains anyone else.
On the parents’ side there are cautions worth hearing too. An Arabic guide on an Egyptian schools directory, published on 30 June 2026 by an unnamed editorial team and written for search engines rather than as research, lists pressure from speed-focused drilling, memorising shortcuts instead of understanding, anxiety about mistakes, and training time crowding out play and reading. Those concerns apply to any speed-drilled mental math, Kani included. The remedy is simple and unglamorous: short sessions, one paper a week rather than three, and a stated goal of accuracy first and consistency second — not a medal. A competition is an excellent measuring instrument and a poor destination.
