How to use a soroban abacus: a beginner-friendly guide
A soroban looks mysterious until someone shows you its two rules. Here is a step-by-step guide to reading the beads, setting numbers, doing your first additions — and knowing when your child is ready to calculate entirely in their head.
Hand a child a soroban for the first time and you will get the same look every parent knows: curiosity, then a slightly worried "what am I supposed to do with this?" The instrument looks mysterious, but the system behind it is small — small enough to learn the basics in a single sitting. This guide walks you through it in seven steps: reading the beads, setting numbers, doing your first additions, meeting the famous "friends", and knowing when your child is ready to calculate entirely in their head. No experience needed. You can learn alongside your child — or stay one comfortable step ahead.
Step 1 — Meet the frame: heaven beads and earth beads
Every soroban shares the same anatomy. A rectangular frame holds a row of vertical rods, and a horizontal bar — teachers call it the beam — runs across them. On every rod sits one bead above the beam and four beads below it. The bead above is the heaven bead, and it is worth five. Each bead below is an earth bead, worth one. That is the entire vocabulary: one five and four ones per rod are enough to show every digit from 0 to 9 in exactly one way.
And one rule governs everything: a bead only counts when it touches the beam. Pushed toward the beam, it joins the number. Pushed away, it leaves. When nothing touches the beam, the rod reads zero.
Step 2 — Read numbers before you set them
Reading comes before doing. Spend the first ten minutes just looking at rods and naming what they show, using four small rules:
- 1 to 4 — that many earth beads pushed up to the beam. Three earth beads at the beam is 3.
- 5 — the heaven bead pulled down to the beam, all earth beads away. One bead, worth five.
- 6 to 9 — the heaven bead down plus earth beads up. 8 is the heaven bead plus three earth beads.
- 0 — nothing touching the beam at all.
Bigger numbers work exactly like written numbers: each rod is one place. Choose a rod for the units — most sorobans mark every third rod with a small dot to help you anchor — then the rod to its left is tens, the next is hundreds, and so on. Show 4 on the tens rod and 2 on the units rod, and the frame says 42, exactly as written. This one-rod-one-digit match is a big part of why soroban children read large numbers so calmly.
Step 3 — Set numbers with the right fingers
Now touch. Classic technique uses two fingers only: the thumb pushes earth beads up toward the beam, and the index finger does everything else — pushing earth beads back down, and moving the heaven bead both ways. It feels fussy for a day and then becomes automatic, and it matters: consistent fingering is what later lets the hands fly without thinking. To clear the frame, tilt it so every bead slides away from the beam, then set it flat again. Then drill: set each digit from 0 to 9 on one rod until it is boring, then two-digit numbers — an age, a house number, today’s date. Say each number out loud as it is set; the ear helps the eye.
Step 4 — Your first additions
Start with sums where every bead you need is simply available. Set 2, push one more earth bead up: 3. Set 1, add 5 by lowering the heaven bead: 6. For numbers with several digits, the soroban has a habit that surprises adults: you work from left to right — biggest place first. To add 34 to 12, add the 3 on the tens rod, then the 4 on the units rod. Left-to-right feels backwards to anyone raised on paper carrying, but it is the natural direction of the frame — and, later, the reason abacus-trained kids can add long chains of numbers as fast as they hear them.
- Set 2, add 2 — push two earth beads up. The frame reads 4.
- Set 3, add 5 — lower the heaven bead. It reads 8.
- Set 12, add 34 — tens first, then units. It reads 46.
- Set 123, add 321 — one rod at a time, biggest place first. It reads 444.
If those felt easy, good — they were chosen to be. Every one of them avoided one particular situation, and that situation is where the real method begins.
Step 5 — When the beads run out: small friends and big friends
Set 3 and try to add 4. Problem: only one earth bead is left on the rod. The soroban’s answer is one of the loveliest ideas in elementary math: if you cannot add 4, add 5 and take 1 away. So +4 becomes +5 − 1 — lower the heaven bead, remove one earth bead, and the rod reads 7. Pairs that build five together — 1 and 4, 2 and 3 — are called small friends. When the whole rod is full, the same trick uses ten: to add 8 to 4, you add 10 on the next rod and take 2 away, so +8 becomes +10 − 2. Pairs that build ten — 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5 — are the big friends.
The friends are the heart of the entire method. They are the moment a child stops counting and starts seeing structure — that 7 is quietly 5 and 2, that 9 is 10 minus 1. Take them slowly: one pair at a time, days on each, with beads under the fingers. There is no prize for rushing this step, and every later skill stands on it.
Step 6 — Practice a little, every day
- Keep sessions short. Five to ten focused minutes a day beat an hour on Saturday — bead skill is built by frequency, not duration.
- Accuracy before speed. Speed arrives on its own once the movements are correct; chasing it early just automates mistakes.
- Say numbers out loud while setting them. Linking ear, eye, and fingers makes the mental image stronger later.
- Use real-life numbers. Prices, license plates, page numbers — setting them on the frame turns a waiting room into practice.
- Stop while it is still fun. Ending one problem early keeps tomorrow’s session something to look forward to.
Step 7 — Know when to move toward anzan
The physical soroban is stage one of something bigger. After enough practice — usually months, not weeks — children begin to finish calculations slightly before their fingers do, because the picture in their head is running ahead of the beads. That is the doorway to anzan: mental calculation on an imagined soroban. You can invite it gently. Ask your child to solve a tiny problem by moving their fingers over an empty table, "playing" the abacus in the air. Then try it with eyes closed. Start with one-rod problems — 2 + 1, 3 + 5 — and let the imagined frame grow at its own pace. There is no deadline; the visualization becomes vivid exactly as fast as the bead work that feeds it.
